Colicky Baby Treatment in Bloomfield Hills, MI
What is Colic?
Any mom or dad who’s spent countless hours trying to settle a colicky baby knows the emotional and physical toll it can take on a family. It’s quite common among babies, with some 40 percent of babies experiencing it in their first year of life. Unfortunately, its cause remains a mystery to doctors.
Colic is diagnosed when a baby cries for at least three hours a day for three or four days a week in the first few months of life. There appears to be no cause of the crying, such as hunger, cold or a wet diaper, and mom and dad are seemingly at a loss to console the baby. A baby with colic shows no signs of physical ailment and will continue to eat and develop at a normal pace.
What Causes Colic?
Researchers have been at a loss to pinpoint the causes of colic, although numerous theories abound, including the mom’s diet being high in dairy, wheat products, coffee or caffeinated sodas. Another theory speculates the baby’s cries are due to a painful gas bubble trapped in his or her stomach.
An undiagnosed gastroesophageal reflux or GERD is believed to be another cause. This reflux can be worsened by the baby’s fast-growing frame, which can make the esophagus spasm, increasing a baby’s pain and discomfort.
Colicky baby treatment includes some trial and error, and testing a variety of techniques, as each baby responds differently. Swaddling can help by putting pressure on the belly. Back rubs, and laying the baby facedown on your lap can encourage any trapped gas to dissipate.
Chiropractic care is gentle and natural and has been proven to alleviate crying in colicky babies, with some studies showing an improvement in as many as ninety-four percent of babies treated.
